Oil Spill From Tanker Causes Odours Across Northern Emirates; Ministry Says No Health Risk
An oil spill from a marine tanker has triggered widespread odours across parts of the northern UAE, but the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment has confirmed the smells pose no health risk to residents.
Beaches closed as cleanup begins
The ministry announced on its X account that its technical monitoring and environmental assessment system detected marine pollution originating from an oil spill. The pollution reached the coastline of Umm Al Quwain, leading to noticeable odours in Sharjah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain itself.
Specialised teams, working in coordination with relevant authorities, immediately began containment measures, including setting up barriers around the affected zones and launching cleanup and treatment operations to minimise environmental damage. Surveys are continuing as a precaution to ensure the safety of the marine environment.
Temporary beach closures and fishing restrictions
As a precautionary step, the ministry has temporarily closed all beaches and coastal areas in the emirate of Umm Al Quwain until cleanup work is completed and further measures are determined. It also urged fishermen and seafarers to follow official instructions and avoid fishing in the impacted locations.
Ministry urges public to rely on official sources
The ministry called on the public to obtain information only from official channels and to avoid spreading rumours. It reiterated its commitment to keeping residents updated on developments.
