Strong Winds and Heavy Rain Lash UAE’s Eastern and Southern Regions
The National Centre of Meteorology issued a warning on Wednesday afternoon as precipitation was recorded across several parts of the country. The alert highlighted the likelihood of convective cloud formation over eastern and southern areas of the United Arab Emirates.
Rain and Strong Winds Forecast
According to the NCM, cumulonimbus clouds may develop over certain eastern and southern regions, bringing rainfall along with occasional fresh to strong winds. These winds, associated with the clouds, could stir up dust and sand, reaching speeds of up to 50km/h. The advisory remains active until 10pm on Wednesday, 21 October.
Cumulonimbus clouds are tall, dense formations that typically result from the rapid rise of warm, moist air. They often trigger sudden showers, gusty winds, and sometimes thunder and lightning, leading to brief but heavy downpours.
Storm Centre Footage Shows Downpours
Videos shared by Storm Centre, which monitors weather conditions nationwide, showed rain falling over Fujairah accompanied by cooler temperatures. The footage captured wet roads and overcast skies across parts of the emirate.
Additional clips posted by the account depicted rain on roads in various locations, including Musaffah, Mazyad, and Hatta, as noted by Storm Centre.
The rainfall comes as temperatures across the country continue to ease with the transition into cooler months. Earlier on Wednesday, the NCM reported that the lowest temperature recorded in the country was 19.3°C in Raknah, Al Ain, at 6am UAE time.
October typically represents a period of transition in the UAE, with daytime heat gradually softening and mornings becoming more pleasant, particularly in mountainous and inland areas.
Motorists Urged to Exercise Caution
Motorists are strongly advised to drive carefully during rainfall and dusty conditions, as visibility may suddenly decrease. Drivers should reduce speed, maintain a safe following distance from other vehicles, and avoid using mobile phones while driving. Residents are also urged to stay away from wadis and low-lying areas where water can accumulate during heavy showers.
Authorities have called on the public to follow official weather updates from the NCM and to rely solely on verified sources for information.
