UAE authorities issue rain safety advisory as unsettled weather expected

Weather forecast

The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) has predicted a period of unsettled conditions from Friday 23 October to Tuesday 27 October, with wind speeds that could reach 50km/h at times. Convective cloud formations may bring rain to some areas, especially in the eastern and western parts of the country. Temperatures are also expected to decrease gradually over the coming days.

Humid conditions could give rise to fog or mist in coastal and inland areas, particularly during the early morning hours. The NCM has said that on Saturday and Sunday, clouds are likely to develop over eastern and northern regions, raising the possibility of rain.

Electrical safety precautions

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has called on residents to have their home electrical systems inspected by a qualified technician before the rainy season begins. Outdoor electrical fittings and connections should be checked to ensure they are protected against water ingress.

DEWA has listed specific preventive measures residents should take. These include checking that electrical distribution boards and meter boxes are secure and properly closed; replacing any damaged covers on meter-box windows, including those in utility rooms or near villa entrances; and sealing unused cable openings and conduits, including those on rooftops, to prevent water from entering.

Residents should also verify that exposed outdoor electrical connections are fitted with waterproof sockets and fixtures, and that earthing connections in panels and distribution boards are correctly installed. Distribution boards should be kept accessible and free from obstruction.

DEWA recommends that all inspections, repairs and routine maintenance be carried out by a qualified electrical technician. For additional information, residents can visit DEWA’s website at www.dewa.gov.ae.

During wet weather, the authority advises residents to take care around electrical installations and to avoid touching exposed wires or electrical equipment that may have come into contact with water. Any damaged electrical fittings or suspected faults should be examined by a qualified technician. Electrical cabinets must remain securely closed, and water should not be allowed to enter meter boxes or distribution boards.

Municipal preparations

Dubai Municipality announced on Thursday that it has activated its rainy‑season preparations, with field teams, equipment and operational systems working around the clock to safeguard residents, visitors and property. The response includes the maintenance and cleaning of stormwater drainage networks and inlets, preparations at wastewater treatment plants, and measures to manage water accumulation and respond to emergency reports.

The municipality stated that its field force comprises 675 specialised personnel and nearly 1,100 units of equipment and machinery. These include 200 water tankers, 300 diesel pumps, 200 vehicles, 10 temporary water‑collection lakes, three jetting units, 13 water‑recycling units, three generators and 24 cranes.

Travel and visibility advice

Motorists are advised to monitor official weather updates, adhere to speed limits and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles when visibility is reduced by fog or mist. Residents are encouraged to continue following official advisories as weather conditions develop.
