Gargash hails Nusseibeh’s UN bid as testament to UAE’s human capital investment
Dr Anwar Mohammed Gargash, Diplomatic Adviser to the UAE President, has described the nomination of Lana Nusseibeh for the post of UN Secretary-General as a clear sign of the country’s expanding international influence and its sustained commitment to nurturing homegrown talent.
National pride in global recognition
In a statement shared on his official social media account, Gargash said the candidacy was a source of national pride and underscored the accomplishments of Emiratis who have assumed prominent roles on the world stage.
“With the UAE’s nomination of Lana Nusseibeh for the position of United Nations Secretary-General, we have every reason to take pride in our national talent and its growing presence on the international stage,” Gargash wrote.
Examples of Emirati achievement
He pointed to several other Emiratis whose international successes, in his view, reflect the country’s dedication to investing in its citizens. Among those he named were Mohammed Ben Sulayem, Shaikha Al Nowais and Ahmed Al Raisi.
“From Mohammed Ben Sulayem to Shaikha Al Nowais, Ahmed Al Raisi and others, we see the fruits of investing in people and recognise the depth and sustainability of what has been achieved throughout our nation’s development journey,” Gargash said.
Future aspirations and nomination process
The adviser added that these milestones illustrate the UAE’s ongoing progress and its hopes for the future. He said the country’s development path carried “ambitions for the future that are worthy of the UAE and its standing”.
His remarks followed the UAE’s formal nomination of Nusseibeh, who serves as Minister of State and the country’s envoy to the United Nations and the European Union, for the position of UN Secretary-General.
Nusseibeh announced her candidacy as the United Nations prepares to choose a successor to António Guterres, whose second five-year term concludes on 31 December 2026.
The nomination comes during the ongoing selection process, which involves consultations and straw polls within the UN Security Council. The next Secretary-General will be appointed by the UN General Assembly on the recommendation of the Security Council.
