Emirati Economist Ali Al Hosani Leads Arab Group at the IMF
Early Career in Abu Dhabi
Ali Al Hosani began his professional journey within Emirati institutions, serving as a member of the Office of Strategic Affairs at the Abu Dhabi Crown Prince’s Court and as a member of the Abu Dhabi Investment Council. These roles gave him exposure to strategic planning and investment management within the UAE’s governmental framework. His work has not been limited to a single area of the economy; it has spanned strategic policy, investment and international finance, fields that require an integrated understanding of government decisions, market performance, financial institutions and global economic trends.
International Financial Experience
After his domestic assignments, Al Hosani moved to Washington, D.C., where he worked with major multilateral financial bodies. He served as an adviser to the Executive Director of the World Bank Group, gaining insight into development finance and economic stability issues. Later, he joined the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private‑sector financing arm of the World Bank Group, as a portfolio manager based in Washington, where he monitored risk, assessed financial performance and evaluated investment opportunities across emerging markets.
Education and Leadership Training
Al Hosani holds a Master’s degree in International Business and Policy from George Mason University in the United States and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the American University in Washington. He also completed the Executive Leadership Programme at Harvard College, which added advanced training in leadership, management and decision‑making to his academic background.
Leading the Arab Group at the IMF
Before assuming his current position, Al Hosani served as Acting Executive Director at the IMF from 2021. He now holds the role of Executive Director of the Arab Group at the International Monetary Fund, a senior post that coordinates the interests of Arab member states on the IMF’s Executive Board. The Arab Group provides a framework for coordinating interests within the IMF’s Executive Board. In this capacity he oversees a broad range of economic issues, engages with governments, officials and experts, and contributes to discussions on financial stability, growth and economic reform. His work reflects the IMF’s mandate to monitor global economies, advise on fiscal and monetary policy and support members facing economic challenges.
The significance of his appointment lies in the combination of local expertise in strategic and investment work with international experience in finance and development institutions. It highlights the growing presence of Emirati talent in global economic forums and places him at the centre of debates on economic stability and the future of international financial cooperation. This responsibility comes at a time when cooperation between countries and international financial institutions is becoming increasingly important. Global trade, finance and investment markets continue to undergo significant changes, bringing challenges related to growth, financial sustainability and resilience to economic shocks. Against this backdrop, Al Hosani’s experience across government, investment and international institutions provides valuable insight into the nature of economic challenges and the different approaches required to address them.
Al Hosani’s career illustrates a progressive path through economics, investment and international policy, culminating in the responsibility of representing the Arab Group at the IMF—a role that blends technical expertise, coordination and institutional leadership. It also places him at the centre of discussions on economic stability and the future of international financial cooperation.
