iPhone Duo hits UAE stores: What the Dh8,499 foldable really costs with accessories
The iPhone Duo, Apple’s first foldable smartphone, went on sale in the UAE on October 23 with a starting price of Dh8,499, but adding essential protection, insurance and charging accessories can push the bill well beyond Dh10,000.
The entry-level model comes with 256GB of storage, Apple’s A20 Pro chip and two displays: a 5.4-inch outer screen for everyday tasks and a 7.6-inch inner display for reading, video and multitasking. At the top end, the 2TB version costs Dh13,599.
The base price and what you get
The appeal of the Duo is straightforward: it combines a regular smartphone with extra screen space when needed. For users who regularly work across documents, read long articles or watch videos while travelling, that additional room could be useful. However, the device is essentially a different way of using a phone, not necessarily something that cannot already be done on a conventional smartphone.
Spending nearly Dh8,500 on a phone is one thing; carrying it without protection is another. Apple’s official iPhone Duo Case costs Dh319 and covers both halves of the device against scratches and drops. The iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand, priced at Dh529, allows the unfolded phone to stand upright for video calls or watching videos. Adding either case immediately changes the price: with the standard case the total is Dh8,818; with the Folio it is Dh9,028.
Adding protection and AppleCare+
Two years of AppleCare+ for the Duo costs approximately Dh1,349, adding around 16 per cent to the phone’s starting price. The plan covers eligible accidental damage subject to service fees and provides battery replacement if capacity falls below 80 per cent. Unlike conventional iPhones, the Duo has a folding display and hinge mechanism alongside its outer screen, making repair costs a key consideration. On standard iPhones in the UAE, AppleCare+ service fees are Dh99 for eligible screen or back-glass damage and Dh349 for other accidental damage; the Duo also has a separate fee for replacing its cover layer. Out-of-warranty prices for the Duo’s folding display and hinge have not yet been published. Adding AppleCare+ and the standard case brings the total to Dh10,167.
Charging and other accessories
The iPhone Duo comes with a USB-C cable but no power adapter or EarPods. If you already own a compatible charger, there is no need to buy another. However, Apple’s 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max costs Dh169 and is the recommended option for faster wired charging. For wireless charging, Apple’s two-metre MagSafe Charger costs Dh199 and requires a power adapter of at least 35W. Together, the adapter and MagSafe Charger add Dh368. These are convenience purchases but can turn an already expensive purchase into a considerably larger bill.
Storage also affects the final cost. The 2TB iPhone Duo costs Dh13,599, which is Dh5,100 more than the base model before adding any accessories. For users who store large video files, extensive photo libraries or work documents locally, extra storage may be useful, but many may find 256GB combined with cloud storage sufficient. Ongoing iCloud+ subscription costs may also apply.
Depending on the choices made, the final bill varies considerably: the basic purchase (256GB, no extras) is Dh8,499; a protected setup with standard case and AppleCare+ totals Dh10,167; a fully equipped setup with Folio, AppleCare+, adapter and MagSafe charger comes to Dh10,745; and the premium setup with the 2TB model and the same protection and accessories reaches Dh15,845. These figures do not include mobile plans, iCloud+ subscriptions or other extras.
Is it worth the investment?
The Duo’s biggest selling point is its ability to function as both a smartphone and a larger-screen device. For frequent travellers or those who prefer working from their phones, the convenience could justify some of the premium. However, there are several reasons to think carefully. It is a first-generation Apple product, and questions about long-term durability, repair costs and how well the folding mechanism holds up over several years will become clearer with real-world use. The larger screen is not automatically a necessity if your phone is mainly for messaging, photos, social media, calls and occasional streaming. If you already own a tablet or laptop, the Duo might become another expensive screen rather than a replacement. Finally, the price itself is substantial: at Dh10,167 for a protected entry-level setup, you are making a significant investment in a device whose main advantage is its folding design.
One argument in the Duo’s favour is that it could replace both a new iPhone and a compact tablet, potentially saving the cost of two devices. However, a conventional iPhone and an iPad mini may still cost less together, depending on the models chosen. For someone who already owns a functional phone and tablet, the Duo represents spending more for a new experience. The iPhone Duo is an interesting proposition for those who have been waiting for Apple to enter the foldable market, but at Dh8,499 before accessories, it is not a purchase that makes financial sense for everyone. If you regularly need more screen space, want to carry fewer devices and are comfortable paying a premium for a first-generation product, it may be worth considering. If your current iPhone already does everything you need, there is less reason to rush.
