Dubai Police caution job hunters about fraudulent part-time employment scams

Authorities in Dubai have issued a warning to individuals seeking employment, alerting them to the prevalence of fraudulent part-time job offers designed to steal sensitive banking information or trick them into participating in illegal financial transactions.

Dubai Police caution job hunters about fraudulent part-time employment scams

The Anti-Fraud Centre, operating under the General Department of Criminal Investigation, clarified that legitimate part-time positions are only offered by officially licensed companies with verifiable identities and physical addresses. Genuine job advertisements also include clear terms of employment, specify the rights and obligations of both the employer and the employee, and follow standard recruitment procedures, the centre stated.

Background of the warning

The advisory forms part of Dubai Police’s involvement in the Ministry of Interior’s campaign titled “A Safe UAE Starts with Your Digital Awareness,” which was launched in conjunction with Cybersecurity Awareness Month in October. The initiative aims to increase public knowledge about online fraud and cybercrime.

The Anti-Fraud Centre explained that scammers frequently target people looking for extra income by promoting attractive part-time opportunities that later prove to be dishonest schemes. Such fraudulent activities may involve attempts to obtain applicants’ bank account details or pressure them into executing or facilitating illicit money transfers linked to criminal networks.

How to verify a job offer

Dubai Police urged jobseekers to confirm the legal standing and identity of any company purporting to offer employment before disclosing personal information, accepting an offer, or sending any money. Applicants should verify company names and registration details through official government channels and ensure they are dealing with a properly identifiable and lawful employer.

The centre stressed that jobseekers should never pay any fees in exchange for securing a job. Additionally, individuals were warned against sharing banking information or one-time passwords (OTPs) with any person or organisation claiming to provide employment. Job hunters were also advised to refrain from clicking on unfamiliar links received through social media platforms or messaging applications.

Key warning signs to watch for

The Anti-Fraud Centre highlighted a particularly hazardous indicator of a scam: when an employer asks an applicant to receive money into their personal bank account and then transfer it to another party in exchange for a commission. Anyone who receives such a request should immediately cease all communication with that entity, as the arrangement may be connected to unlawful financial activities.

Reporting suspicious offers

Dubai Police called on the public to remain vigilant and to avoid responding to dubious job advertisements, especially those that promise effortless earnings without clear recruitment procedures. The Anti-Fraud Centre encouraged anyone who encounters a fraudulent job offer, a suspicious account, or a potentially harmful link to report it via the Dubai Police eCrime platform or by calling 901.

The police force reiterated that public awareness and careful verification are essential steps in preventing online fraud and protecting jobseekers from financial exploitation.
