Victims Identified by Embassy

The Bangladeshi Embassy in Abu Dhabi confirmed to Gulf News that the victims were Ashima Chowdhury, aged 48, and her son Aritra Biswas, aged 15. Their father, Sree Swarup Kanti Biswas, aged 59, was driving the vehicle and survived with injuries.

Details of the Crash

The accident occurred around 9 p.m. on Monday on a stretch of road close to Al Wathba Bridge on Al Ain Road. According to reports, a speeding vehicle struck the family’s car from behind while the father was at the wheel. Police are investigating the incident, and Gulf News was unable to obtain an immediate comment from Abu Dhabi Police.

Eyewitness Recounts the Scene

Family friend and journalist Sanjit Kumar Shil, who was heading to the same event and was only about five minutes behind the family, arrived at the scene shortly after the crash. He told Gulf News, “I might have been just five minutes behind them,” and added, “I saw the police and ambulance rushing past my car.” Moments later he received a call from a friend informing him that one of the families travelling to the event had been involved in an accident. When he reached the spot and saw the vehicle, he realised it was the family he knew. He said, “It was shocking. We all knew each other for a long time.”

Background and Aftermath

Sanjit noted that the family had been long‑term residents of Abu Dhabi. He said Sree Swarup moved to the UAE in 2003 and works as an engineer in the capital, while his wife was employed by a travel agency. Their elder daughter was at home during the accident; she is a university student in Dubai and their son attended a school in Abu Dhabi. According to Sanjit, the father has been discharged from hospital but continues to cope with injuries and trauma. The family is expected to hold the funeral in the UAE.
