Major upgrades planned for Mussafah Road to ease Abu Dhabi traffic

Major upgrades planned for Mussafah Road to ease Abu Dhabi traffic

Planned upgrades on Mussafah Road

Mussafah Road in Abu Dhabi is slated for major upgrades aimed at easing congestion, improving safety and cutting travel times for commuters and businesses, according to the Department of Municipalities and Transport.

The works will cover approximately 13 kilometres along E30 and 8th Street, forming part of two strategic projects unveiled by the authority.

Details of the strategic projects

A post on X from the Department of Municipalities and Transport dated 8 October 2026 states that the key areas are “coordinated within two strategic projects starting from the Haddars – Nuof E11 intersection spanning 37 kilometres and extending to the implementation of new tunnels, roads, and intersections in the Haddars area.”

The same post, translated from Arabic, reads: “A new chapter for Al Hadiriyah Island? Smoother connectivity. The main works continue within two strategic projects, starting from the Al Hadiriyah–Nuof E11 intersection, which is 37 kilometres long, and extending to the implementation of new tunnels, roads and intersections in the Al Hadiriyah area. Upon their completion, these projects will provide direct intersections, reduce travel times and strengthen links between vital areas across Abu Dhabi.”

Additional infrastructure improvements

When completed, the project will feature direct intersections that cut travel time and allow easy connectivity between vital areas across Abu Dhabi.

A key element will be a new free‑flowing highway along 8th Street with three lanes in each direction, plus three extra lanes on each side to give nearby shops and amenities access while separating them from motor‑way traffic, accommodating roughly 4,000 vehicles.

Further enhancements include upgrades to four interchanges on E30, better connections with 8th Street and E20, modifications to nine key junctions, two new bridges between Mussafah and Mohamed Bin Zayed City and an additional pedestrian bridge.

Broader connectivity efforts

The Mussafah scheme complements a wider drive to strengthen connectivity across Abu Dhabi, which includes a planned two‑tunnel undersea link from the eastern tip of Abu Dhabi Island to Mussafah passing beneath Khor Al Maqta and Al Hudayriyat Island channel.

The authority also noted that the new road could reduce the drive to Saadiyat Island to about ten minutes.
