Dubai Considers New Underground Transport Network to Boost Mobility
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority is examining proposals for a fresh underground transit system that could reshape city travel, according to its director general.
Speaking at the Mohammed bin Rashid Leadership Forum this week, Mattar Al Tayer confirmed that the RTA is reviewing a proposed plan for a new underground transport network that would further enhance mobility across the city.
Per The National, the planned underground network would integrate with Dubai’s existing transport system while freeing up space above ground for community living, green spaces and walkable zones.
A video shown alongside the announcement featured metro trains travelling underground past key Dubai landmarks, suggesting the network could improve access to the city’s most popular spots.
Expanding Public Transport Initiatives
The underground scheme represents the latest addition to a series of upgrades planned for Dubai’s public transport network.
This summer, Etihad Rail launched passenger services linking Dubai with Abu Dhabi, Fujairah and Sharjah.
The Dubai Metro is also set to grow, with a new Gold Line scheduled for September 2032; the line will stretch 42 kilometres with 18 stations, becoming the city’s first fully underground metro route from Jumeirah Golf Estates—where it meets Etihad Rail—to Al Ghubaiba.
Dubai Loop Progress
Construction has already begun on Dubai Loop, the futuristic underground transport system being developed by the RTA in partnership with Elon Musk’s Boring Company.
Initial operations will cover the Dubai International Financial Centre and Dubai Mall areas, with plans to expand to 19 stations over a 22‑kilometre route.
